Postdoc opportunities

Please contact me if you are interested in applying for postdoc fellowships:

Scripps institutional fellowship

NOAA climate & global change fellowship

NSF fellowship

While the following search closed in April 2015, we welcome contacts from outstanding candidates.

Postdoctoral scholar positions are available at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego to conduct innovative and independent research in the general area of ocean-atmosphere interaction and climate dynamics. Possible research topics include

  • Dynamics of regional climate change. Observed climate anomalies contain natural variability, and increasingly anthropogenic change. Predicting regional climate change under global warming and evaluating the uncertainties represent a grand challenge for climate science. Regional patterns of ocean warming are important for changes in atmospheric convection and tropical cyclones. We study dynamics of regional climate change, especially the role of ocean-atmosphere interactions and sensitivity to forcing type (CO2 vs. aerosols).
  • Climate variability. We conduct diagnostic and modeling studies of tropical climate variability and predictability. Examples of recent research include slow modulations of ENSO and its teleconnection, monsoon dynamics, and sources of tropical biases in climate model simulation.
  • Satellite data analysis. We are interested in multi-sensor synthesis using scatterometers (e.g., QuikSCAT), altimeters, TRMM, CloudSAT and other satellite/in-situ measurements as well as high-resolution numerical simulations to uncover new phenomena of ocean, atmosphere, and their interaction, and to gain physical insights.

Applications should include Curriculum Vitae with a publications list, and a statement of research interest. The latter (~2 pages long) should describe previous and current research activities, and outline the research to be pursued at Scripps. Please e-mail your application package to sio.clim.pd@gmail.com. Please arrange three letters of reference to be e-mailed directly to the same address. Review of applications will begin on 12 January 2015 but applications will continue to be accepted until the positions are filled. The positions may start on 1 March 2015 or mutually agreeable dates.

At the time of appointment, the successful candidates should have a Ph.D. degree in ocean, atmospheric, climate sciences, or a related field. Initial appointment is for one year and renewable for another year, contingent upon performance and availability of funds. Inquiries may be directed to Shang-Ping Xie (sxie@ucsd.edu).
